CSM Bernie Knight is a native of Kansas City, Kansas, where he entered the United States Marine Corps in 1981. He attended Infantry Training School, and served as an Infantry Rifleman, Team Leader, 60mm Mortar Crewmember, and Scout Sniper. He terminated service with the U.S. Marines in 1985.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1987, as an Infantry Rifleman. He served in a variety of Infantry positions to include Team Leader, Squad Leader, Bradley Commander, Long Range Surveillance Detachment Team Leader, Operations Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Observer Controller, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major and Command Sergeant Major.

In 1991, he served as the Operations Sergeant for the Long Range Surveillance Company with the First Infantry Division in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. His most recent combat deployment was with the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment as the Command Sergeant Major in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His military and civilian education includes all levels of Non-commissioned Officer Education System, the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Ranger School, Long Range Surveillance Leader’s Cou rse, Marine Corps Sniper School, U.S. Navy Scout Swimmer Course, Marine Corps Infantry Mortar School, Bradley Fighting Vehicle Course, Jungle Survival Course, Survival Escape Resistance to Interrogation and Evasion Course, Basic Recruiter School, Jump Master School, and Pathfinder School. CSM Knight earned an Associate’s Degree in General Studies at Barton County Community College.

CSM Knight’s awards include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with 6 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with 8 oak leaf clusters, Valorous Unit Award, Combat Infantryman’s Badge with Star, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, Pathfinder Badge, and the Gold Recruiter Badge. He is a recipient of the British and Thai Parachutist Badges. 

CSM Knight’s last assignment was with the Operations Group, National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California, where he served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor.  On January 20, 2010, he assumed responsibility of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
