LTC Thomas O'Connor

Lieutenant Colonel Tom O’Connor graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1994 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Aviation branch. After completing the Aviation Officer’s Basic Course and basic rotary wing training, he was assigned to the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson Colorado, where he served as a Scout Platoon Leader and Troop Executive Officer.

Following his tour with the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, LTC O’Connor completed the Captain’s Career Course, the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Qualification Course, the Aviation Maintenance Manager’s Course, and then assumed command of Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas. After the unit’s initial fielding, training, and certification, LTC O’Connor and the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment relocated to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and reintegrated into the 25th Infantry Division. During his tenure in the Tropic Lightning Division, LTC O’Connor also served as the Aviation Brigade’s Deputy Operation’s Officer and the Operations Officer for the 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment. Following his tour with the 25th Infantry Division, LTC O’Connor was assigned to the National Training Center where he served as a Company Trainer, the Aviation Battalion S3 Trainer, and as an Assistant Maneuver Brigade S3 Trainer. He then was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, (Air Assault), at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he served as the Squadron’s Executive Officer and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. LTC O’Connor subsequently assumed duties as the Squadron’s Operation Officer and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. LTC O’Connor became the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade’s Operations Officer while deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and continued to serve in this capacity while the Brigade trained for its deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan.  Following his assignment to the 101st Airborne Division, (Air Assault) LTC O’Connor attended the Naval War College and earned his master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
In October 2011, LTC O’Connor assumed command of the 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment and began extensive training in preparation for the Squadron’s deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 12-13.

LTC O’Connor’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (1 OLC), Air Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (2 OLC), Combat Action Badge, Master Aviator Badge, Parachutes’ Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

LTC O’Connor is married to the former Kathleen Fickett, and they have five children.
